AREA HISTORY Wind River Ranch is located in central Wyoming, 30 minutes west of Riverton and 45 minutes east of Dubois. Bordered by the Wind River Reservation, this ranching community has a rich history. Originally established in 1868, the Wind River Reservation is home to Shoshone and Arapaho Native American Tribes. These peoples lived in central Wyoming for thousands of years before White settlers began migrating west, following the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804. Since before Statehood, oil has played an important role in Wyoming's economy. Oil was first discovered in the Wind River Valley in 1832, although the first oil well was not drilled for another 5 decades. Wind River Ranch has had productive oil wells in the past.
